We study the shock dynamics of HMX-graphite mixture explosive. The interface desensitizing mechanism is obtained. By atomistic simulation and theoretical derivation, we prove that a large amount of shock energy is bound in graphite. For this binding, the energy density in HMX is decreased, the probability of hot spot formation is reduced, and the sensitivity is lowered. A theoretical model is built to describe this mechanism.
