This letter presents the results of a computational survey on the damage response of Ni, Al, Cu and Ag bicrystals containing various grain boundaries subjected to shock loading. Three distinct failure patterns emerge physically over the entire misorientation range, which can be correlated with the observed variations in void nucleation stresses in all the materials. The variations in damage with inclination angle for asymmetric grain boundaries bear a familiar trend similar to well established energy variations. In addition, wide variations in void nucleation stress can be related to stacking fault energy of a material. (C)& nbsp;2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
