The effect of loading axes on deformation behavior of Cu/Al multilayer is studied via molecular dynamics. The yield strength under x-axis or y-axis loading parallel to interface is lower than that under z-axis loading perpendicular to interface, while tensile strength is opposite. Partial dislocations preferentially nucleate at nodes of interfacial misfit dislocations under parallel loading, but explosively nucleate below interface under perpendicular loading. Deformation mechanisms under loading along x, y, and z axes are partial dislocation and deformation twinning, extended full dislocation, as well as partial dislocation, respectively. Strip-like voids form at interface under parallel loading and sphere-like voids form below interface under perpendicular loading, respectively.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
