As a key material in an inertial confinement fusion system, potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and its component manufactured must possess extremely high surface and subsurface quality. In this letter, we present our first observation of the amorphization of KDP in the subsurface after nanoindentation on KDP under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results are in good agreement with our Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation predictions. The findings provide an understanding of the deformation mechanisms of KDP under nanoindentation, and offer a sensitive approach to observing electron beam sensitive materials under TEM.
