Engineering the surface and interface of nanomaterials by precise molecular modification is essential for improving interfacial compatibility and dispersion stability in liquid. We report three different molecular structures of dialkyldithiophosphate (DDP) functionalized metal organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles as oil additives can realize friction and wear reduction. UiO-67 nanoparticles were modified respectively by DDP molecules with different alkyl chains of various lengths and branches. Molecular dynamic simulation demonstrated DDP molecules were on the surface and in the pores of UiO-67 nanoparticles. The UiO-67@DDP additives in oil strongly reduced the coefficient of friction and wear volume by more than 50%. Additionally, the protective tribo-film formed by the deposition of UiO-67@DDP nanoparticles and tribo-chemical reaction contributes to the mitigation of friction and wear.
