Grain boundaries (GBs) have often been characteristically defined by the global minimum energy atomic structural configuration. However, less favourable thermodynamic structures may become significant to accommodate non-equilibrium crystalline transformations and defect interactions. This paper provides a concise overview of recent findings that demonstrate strong corroborative evidence matching the structural characteristics of a few metastable structures observed in previous studies of Sigma 5(310) GBs.
