The interaction between coherent Ag precipitates and various migrating Cu <111> tilt grain boundaries has been studied by molecular dynamics' simulations. The moving grain boundaries were retarded by the Zener pinning and the ability of different grain boundaries to move past the precipitates were also different. After passage, one precipitate was able to reorient to become coherent with the growing grain. We find that the precipitate reorientation was resulted from a twist grain boundary migration mechanism. The energies associated with the reorientation process are also discussed to suggest the conditions for its occurrence. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
